Assmang Proprietary Ltd. Rorie Wilson, the alternate director, said manganese alloy production at his plant in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, had been affected by force majeure.
Wilson said the mining company declared force majeure to customers last week because of civil unrest in South Africa and the closure of ports in Durban and Richards Bay. As of Sunday, force majeure still exists.
Protests erupted on July 10th after former President Jacob Zuma was jailed in defiance of a court order, resulting in looting of shops, factories and other places.
The unrest in South Africa has hit China's manganese supplies in major exporters.
Although Transnet SOC Ltd., a state-owned port, freight railway and pipeline operator, It said on Friday that its port and terminal operations in Durban were slowly normalizing, but that port disruptions could take two weeks to ease, affecting manganese exports to China.
'The situation has not stabilized or returned to normal, so there will still be delays in seeking to restart operations, and there is a large backlog at ports, 'Mr. Wilson said.
In addition, Asmond's manganese and iron ore mining operations continued to operate normally, he said.
