[South Africa launches 2GW electricity tender to fill the power supply gap] South Africa's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy has launched a tender for the construction of 2 gigawatts of power generation capacity, including renewable energy, to seek to improve its electricity supply. In its invitation to (RFP), the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said the goal was to mitigate risks, which would help the country fill the short-term power supply gap.

SMM: South Africa's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy has begun bidding for the construction of 2 gigawatts of power generation capacity, including renewable energy, to seek to improve its power supply.

In its invitation to (RFP), the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said the goal was to mitigate risks, which would help the country fill the short-term power supply gap.

The tender was carried out under the "risk reduction independent generator procurement plan" (RMIPPPP).

The tender is open to a variety of energy and technologies, including renewable energy, on the condition that these power plants can be fully operational by the end of June 2022. According to the announcement, the proposed technical solution must be schedulable and capable of "providing a range of support services to grid system operators".

"the goal of RMIPPPP is not only to reduce current power supply constraints, but also to reduce the utilization of diesel-based peak generators," the South African Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said.

The government estimates that the tender is expected to attract about 40 billion South African rand (US $2.4 billion) of investment in the region.

[SMM Tin Flash: Global Smartphone Shipments in 2026 Are Expected to Decline by About 7% YoY]
According to market forecasts, global smartphone shipments in 2026 are expected to decline by about 7% YoY. This forecast is based on memory price assumptions for Q1 2026, and it is expected that, over time, price pressure and tight supply will begin to ease somewhat in H2 this year. In 2026, the global smartphone market will face significant challenges. Tightening memory supply and persistently high prices have continued to increase cost pressure on producers. At present, memory’s share in the smartphone bill of materials (BOM) has risen markedly, eroding producers’ profitability, with a more pronounced impact on entry-level devices. Since Q4 2025, smartphone producers have begun raising retail prices to maintain margins. However, continued price increases may weaken market demand, especially in price-sensitive emerging markets.
