South African Minerals Commission: the country's mineral production will fall by 8% Mel 10% this year

SMM5 March 27: mines across South Africa were forced to suspend operations in late March. The South African Minerals Commission said that due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, South Africa's mineral production is very likely to fall by 8% by 10% in 2020.

CEO Peter Steenkamp of Harmony Gold, a gold-mining start-up, said its mines would gradually resume operations from June 1, and it would take about a month to operate at full capacity. He also pointed out that the acquisition of AngloGold Ashanti's Mponeng Gold Mine may not be completed before the end of July.

At present, 196 employees at the Mponeng gold mine have tested positive for the new crown virus, and operations at the mine have been suspended.

Mponeng world-class gold mine is not only the deepest mine in the world, but also one of the largest and highest grade gold mines.

The pits and tunnels are 370km long and meander to a depth of about 4350 meters. it takes 90 minutes for miners to reach the mining surface from the ground, as does the return journey.

But gold production at the Mponeng gold mine has declined steadily in recent years, and miners have to dig deeper to get gold.
