[SMM Aluminum Flash News] China Achieves 35% Hydrogen Co-Firing Breakthrough in Coal-Fired Power Generation

Published: Jun 9, 2026 14:26
China has achieved a world-first breakthrough by successfully operating a coal-fired power generation system with a 35% hydrogen blending ratio, according to state media CCTV. The level is significantly higher than previous international trials, which generally remained below 10% due to combustion instability, deflagration risks and higher NOx emissions. Experts said the technology moves hydrogen from an auxiliary fuel to a major fuel substitute. When powered by green hydrogen, carbon emissions could be reduced by up to 50% while maintaining effective NOx control. The development supports China’s coal-power decarbonization efforts, although high green hydrogen costs, transportation, storage and infrastructure requirements remain key barriers to large-scale commercial deployment.

Aluminum Alloy 2608 Contract Rebounds, Closes Higher at 23,150 Yuan/mt
[SMM Aluminum Alloy Daily Review] Today, the cast aluminum alloy 2608 contract moved downwards after a higher opening, then rebounded strongly, closing at 23,150 yuan/mt, up 155 yuan from yesterday's settlement price, an increase of 0.67%. Open interest increased by 531 lots to 15,326 lots, with the rise in open interest and price suggesting a bullish signal. In the short term, watch whether the resistance at the 23,200 yuan/mt level can be effectively broken.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Scandium Canada Partnered With University of Waterloo to Develop Aluminum-Scandium alloy
Scandium Canada has partnered with the University of Waterloo to develop aluminum-scandium alloys for additive manufacturing applications. The collaboration between Scandium+ and Waterloo’s Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (MSAM) will initially focus on establishing manufacturing parameters for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) metal 3D printing. The project aims to expand the commercial adoption of aluminum-scandium alloys while reducing production costs. Known for their high strength, lightweight properties and resistance to cracking, aluminum-scandium alloys are considered attractive for aerospace and defense applications. The initiative will also support the development of a North American scandium supply chain and generate technical data needed for wider industrial adoption.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Toyota Establishes Closed-Loop Aluminum Recycling System for Hybrid Vehicle Production in UK
Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has established a closed-loop aluminum recycling system at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, creating what it describes as a European-first process for recovering aluminum from end-of-life vehicles and reusing it in new hybrid vehicle production. Recycled aluminum from discarded alloy wheels is sent to Toyota’s Deeside engine plant in Wales, where it is processed into hybrid powertrain components before returning to Burnaston for installation in new Corolla vehicles. Toyota produced its first vehicle containing recycled aluminum from this system on March 19, 2026. The Burnaston facility serves as a pilot site, with a second Circular Factory planned for Wałbrzych, Poland, later this year.
