[SMM Analysis: Domestic Conflicts in the DRC Have Not Yet Affected Copper Production and Transportation] The areas affected by conflicts in the DRC are mainly located in the northern and eastern provinces, while copper resource production is primarily distributed in the southern provinces of Katanga and the southernmost edge of Lualaba Province along the copper belt. There is a significant distance between the conflict zones and the copper production areas. Currently, there have been no reports of copper ore production being impacted by the conflicts. On the other hand, the DRC's resource exports are mainly transported by rail directly to Angola, Tanzania's Dar es Salaam Port, and South Africa's Durban Port. The railway lines generally extend laterally or southward, avoiding the conflict zones in the north. So far, there have been no reports of copper ore transportation routes being affected by the conflicts.

Since the beginning of 2025, conflicts in the DRC have escalated, impacting metal resource production. According to news reports, in January 2025, the DRC's anti-government armed group "M23 Movement" intensified its offensive, forming a siege around Goma, the capital of North Kivu Province in the eastern part of the country. On January 25, the DRC military stated that, with the support of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping forces, government troops repelled the "M23 Movement's" offensive on Goma. On February 6, 2025, according to the Congolese Press Agency (ACP), the DRC government issued an international arrest warrant for Nanga, the leader of the "Congo River Alliance," a rebel group affiliated with the "M23 Movement." On February 8, 2025, local time, the East African Community (EAC) and SADC held a joint summit and issued a communiqué calling for an end to the conflict in the DRC. On February 15, 2025, local time, the DRC's anti-government armed group "M23 Movement" announced that it had taken control of Kavumu Airport in South Kivu Province. On February 16, local time, the "M23 Movement" entered Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu Province and the second-largest city in the eastern DRC. On February 16, the DRC government stated that the anti-government armed group "M23 Movement" had entered Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu Province and the second-largest city in the eastern DRC. On February 18, local time, it was reported that the Burundian troops, tasked with peacekeeping and countering the "M23 Movement" in South Kivu Province, began withdrawing from the DRC after the "M23 Movement" occupied Bukavu, the provincial capital of South Kivu.

Due to the escalating conflict in the DRC, which has affected tin and tantalum mining areas, on March 13, 2025, Alphamin Resources, the operator of the Bisie mine, announced the temporary suspension of operations at its eastern DRC mine. Bisie is the world's third-largest tin mine, with tin concentrate production reaching 17.3 mt in 2024, accounting for approximately 6% of global tin ore supply. Today, tin and tantalum prices surged directly.

As shown in the chart, the conflict-affected areas in the DRC are mainly located in the northern and eastern provinces, while copper resource production is primarily distributed in the southern provinces of Katanga and the southernmost edge of Lualaba Province along the copper belt. The war zones are significantly distant from the copper resource production areas. So far, there have been no reports of copper mine production being affected by the conflict.

On the other hand, the DRC's resource exports are mainly transported by rail directly to Angola, Tanzania's Dar es Salaam Port, and South Africa's Durban Port. The railway lines are mostly horizontal or extend southward, avoiding the war zones to the north. Currently, there have been no reports of copper mine transportation routes being affected by the conflict.

Chile's Water Crisis Threatens Atacama's Copper and Lithium Mining Amid 14-Year Drought
Chile’s most pressing crisis at present is the issue of water resources. The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world and also the core area for copper and lithium ore extraction. The local area has experienced a drought for as long as 14 years, and reservoir storage has fallen to only about 30%. For miners, water resources are not a secondary issue, but an indispensable key production factor in such processes as ore processing, dust suppression, and equipment cooling. The decline in ore grade has further exacerbated the predicament

Trump Adjusts Metal Tariffs, Applies 50% Rate to Consumer Prices Under Section 232, Details Unclear
US President Trump adjusted the national security tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and copper, lowering the tariff rates on derivative products made from these metals, streamlining compliance procedures, and preventing the declared value of imports from being understated.A senior Trump administration official said that, under a proclamation signed by Trump, the US would continue to maintain a 50% import tariff on imports of metal commodities such as steel, aluminum, and copper pursuant to Section 232 of the Trade Act of 1974, but would apply this rate to the price paid by US consumers. It is currently unclear how the selling price—and the resulting tariffs—would be determined.
