On the 13th, the U.S. government announced a significant increase in import tariffs for Chinese products, including a 100% hike in tariffs for electric vehicles, as part of strengthening the protection of domestic strategic industries in the United States. According to a press release from the Office of the United States Trade Representative, some tariffs will take effect on September 27. In addition to the 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, the United States will also impose a 50% tariff on Chinese solar cells, and a 25% tariff on Chinese steel, aluminum, electric vehicle batteries, and key minerals. Meanwhile, the United States has raised the import tariff on Chinese semiconductors by 50%, with this new tax rate set to take effect in January 2025. Within the category of semiconductors, there are newly added categories of polysilicon and silicon wafers used in solar panels.
