SHANGHAI, Sep 14 (SMM) – The September pricing cycle has ended, with glass companies significantly raising their prices due to the strong cost pressures from the current increase in soda ash prices. The swift rise in soda ash prices has compelled companies to predict short-term costs to establish this month’s pricing, to prevent potential losses later in the month. Despite a slight decrease in scheduled production of PV module from August, demand remains high, bolstering glass companies' confidence in maintaining increased prices. Most photovoltaic glass companies raised their prices by about 2 yuan/square meter. While some companies offered discounts to facilitate sales, there was still a notable overall price increase.
On the supply side, no new capacity was released domestically last week. Due to the continuous increase in glass prices and a temporary supply shortage, glass companies have expressed a growing interest in investing in new capacity.
In terms of future prices, SMM believes that despite the significant rise in glass prices, further increases are still possible. As October nears and domestic natural gas prices rise due to winter heating demand, the cost of glass production will increase. Simultaneously, the domestic peak season of PV installation in the fourth quarter is likely to boost demand. Given these dual factors, glass prices could potentially reach a new annual high.
As of September 7th, 3.2mm photovoltaic glass was priced between 27.5-28.0 yuan/square meter, averaging 27.25 yuan/square meter. 2.0mm photovoltaic glass was priced between 18.5-20.0 yuan/square meter, averaging 19.25 yuan/square meter. Overall, the average price this month increased by 1.75 yuan/square meter.
