National Bureau of Statistics: national output of ten non-ferrous metals increased by 4.1% in May compared with the same period last year.

SMM: in May, the national output of ten non-ferrous metals increased by 4.1% compared with the same period last year, or 1.9% higher than the same period last year. Among them, copper production increased by 13.3%, down 5.2% in the same period last year; electrolytic aluminum production decreased by 0.1%, compared with 2.4% in the same period last year; lead production increased by 17.1%, an increase of 10 percentage points over the same period last year; and zinc production increased by 4.5%, down 2.9 percentage points.

From January to May, the national output of ten non-ferrous metals was 24.13 million tons, an increase of 2.7 percent over the same period last year, and the growth rate dropped 1.3 percentage points from the same period last year. Of this total, copper output was 3.97 million tons, up 2.7 percent, down 1.7 percent; electrolytic aluminum production was 14.81 million tons, up 2.1 percent, or 0.6 percent; lead production was 2.21 million tons, up 1 percent, down 14.8 percent; and zinc production was 2.53 million tons, up 9.1 percent, down 0.6 percent in the same period last year. Alumina production was 28.93 million tons, down 5.8 per cent from a year earlier and up 6.9 per cent in the same period last year.

The prices of major non-ferrous metals are up from last month. The average trading prices of copper, electrolytic aluminum, lead and zinc in the Shanghai Futures Exchange in May were 43553 yuan / ton, 13048 yuan / ton, 14165 yuan / ton and 16616 yuan / ton, respectively, up 5%, 8.4%, 1.1% and 4.1% over the previous month, down 8.1%, 8.1%, 12.3% and 21.3% from the same period last year.

The COMEX-LME copper price spread has continued to widen over the past two weeks, reaching approximately $400/t by late May and touching a recent high of $500/t. With the cross-market arbitrage window remaining open, traders have accelerated the cancellation of LME registered warrants and the transfer of material to the United States. LME copper inventory drawdowns have picked up pace, falling 3,375 tonnes on May 29th to 386,050 tonnes — a fresh 10-week low.
