According to local media sources in the Philippines, the Ministry of Transportation of the Philippines and Japan Co., Ltd. recently signed a supply contract worth 12.1 billion pesos with Japan Sumitomo Company (Sumitomo), covering the stainless steel train project of the Philippine National Railway Tutuban-Malolos. The project is the initial phase of the Manila-Clark subway system, which will travel from Tutuban Station in Manila to the city of Malos in Bragan.
Transport Minister Arthur Tugade said the Ministry of Transport and Sumitomo will work closely together to deliver the train for the first time in the third quarter of 2021.
J-Trec-Sumitomo will produce and deliver a fleet of 13 trains of 8 vehicles each for a total of 104 vehicles. Tugade pointed out that rolling stock can hold up to 2242 passengers. The section from Tutuban to Marolos broke ground on February 15, 2019. The 37.6 km elevated railway system connects Marolos to Manila.
The train can travel 120 kilometers per hour, and once the system is fully operational in 2022, the travel time between Manila and Bragan will be reduced from 1 hour and 30 minutes to 35 minutes.
