[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Chinese Taiwan's Stainless Steel Prices Expected to Rise on Higher Raw Material Costs

Published: Apr 20, 2026 18:05
Chinese Taiwan's stainless steel prices are poised for a sixth consecutive monthly increase, driven by persistently high raw material costs, rising international stainless steel prices, and another price hike by Tsingshan in Indonesia. The implementation of Indonesia's new nickel ore benchmark price (HPM) policy on the 15th, alongside China's Q1 GDP growth of 5% beating market expectations, has pushed nickel ore prices higher. Having risen steadily since December last year with a cumulative gain of NT$19,500/ton over five months, Chinese Taiwan's stainless steel prices are widely expected to rise again in May by NT$3,000–4,000/ton.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] According to CREA, Stainless Steel Still Leads Indonesia's Nickel Demand
According to CREA report, stainless steel remains the dominant end-use for Indonesia's nickel despite ongoing "green nickel" marketing efforts. In 2025, 83% of nickel output will go to stainless steel versus 17% for EV batteries; by 2030, stainless steel is still projected to account for 51% of supply against 18% for batteries. Demand from the battery sector faces uncertainty as more EVs shift to nickel-free technologies. Indonesia, which produces over half of global refined nickel, faces mounting pressure from stricter environmental regulations and carbon taxes over its coal-powered production, along with broader supply chain risks. Separately, BMI (a Fitch Solutions company) raised its 2026 nickel price forecast to US$16,600/ton, citing policy uncertainty and rising supply risks.

Tsingshan Group released its May futures price list today, raising all 300-series grades by RMB300/MT, with floor prices set for 304 cold-rolled and hot-rolled coil. Liyang Stainless and Delong followed with matching increases. In Chinese Taiwan, 304 cold-rolled coil returned to a 3-year high of NT$70,500/MT, with a 6th consecutive monthly increase widely expected in May at NT$3,000–4,000/MT. On prices, 304 futures closed at RMB14,925/MT; Wuxi and Foshan spot cold-rolled averaged RMB14,900/MT; 316L averaged RMB28,200/MT in Wuxi and RMB28,250/MT in Foshan; 201 and 430 cold-rolled held at RMB8,700/MT and RMB7,800/MT respectively. While firm raw material costs continue to underpin prices, the divergence between futures pullback and weak downstream demand remains a key market dynamic to watch.
