[SMM Steel] EU semi-finished steel imports jump in 2025, led by China

[SMM Steel] EU imports of semi-finished steel rose 34.6% YoY to 8.91 million mt in 2025, with slabs up 28.6% and square billets surging 51%. Russia remained the largest supplier (41.8%), while China recorded the fastest growth, with shipments increasing 134.5% YoY to 1.5 million mt. Brazil and Vietnam also expanded exports, highlighting stronger reliance on external supply amid cost-driven procurement by European rolling mills.

[SMM Steel] According to American Iron and Steel Institute, United States raw steel production for the week ending April 4, 2026, reached 1.831 million net tons, with capacity utilization at 79.1%, up 1.6% WoW from 1.803 million net tons and 77.9% utilization. Output increased 8.2% YoY from 1.692 million net tons. Year-to-date production totaled 24.028 million net tons, up 5.2% YoY, with utilization at 77.4%.

[SMM Steel] European Union Q2 steel import quotas were rapidly exhausted in early April, particularly for shipments from India, China, Turkey and Vietnam. India exceeded quotas for 225,305 mt of HRC (1A), while China used up 128,348 mt of metallic coated sheets (4B). Turkey surpassed quotas for 98,153 mt of wire rod and 84,033 mt of hollow sections. Vietnam exceeded its 10,725 mt organic coated sheet quota under “other countries,” with about 17,590 mt awaiting clearance at EU ports.
