[SMM Analysis] Lower Alumina Prices Improve China’s Aluminum Profits in February

Published: Feb 28, 2026 15:16

SMM February 28 news:
According to SMM data, the average tax-inclusive full cost of China's aluminum industry in February 2026 fell 0.9% MoM and dropped 5.7% YoY. During the period, alumina raw material costs and auxiliary material costs declined, and the total cost pulled back slightly. The average SMM A00 spot price (January 26–February 25) in February was largely stable, and aluminum profit margins expanded to 7,707 yuan/mt. If the industry calculates based on the monthly average price, 100% of domestic operating aluminum capacity was profitable in February.
Cost breakdown:

Alumina raw material side: SMM data showed the average SMM alumina index in February was 2,621 yuan/mt (January 26–February 25), down 1.7% MoM. Production cuts at alumina plants during the month shifted inventory to destocking, but after the holiday, some aluminum smelters proactively reduced inventory, resulting in actual demand being lower than theoretical demand. Prices saw only a slight rebound by month-end, and the monthly average price dropped MoM. Entering March, alumina prices face both bullish and bearish factors. On one hand, operating alumina capacity is expected to decline MoM; on the other hand, aluminum smelters’ proactive destocking is expected to reduce demand. Overall, alumina raw material prices are projected to change by a relatively small margin.
Auxiliary material market side: Both prebaked anode and fluoride salt prices pulled back in February. In March, prebaked anode and aluminum fluoride prices are expected to maintain a slight downward trend, and auxiliary material costs are projected to decrease.
Electricity price side: Electricity prices were generally stable in February, with slight declines in some regions, leading to a small drop in the national average aluminum power cost. Entering March, electricity prices are expected to remain largely stable, and aluminum power costs are projected to hold steady.
Overall, SMM expects the weighted average tax-inclusive full cost of China's aluminum industry in March 2026 to be largely stable, averaging around 15,750–16,150 yuan/mt.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Scandium Canada Partnered With University of Waterloo to Develop Aluminum-Scandium alloy
Scandium Canada has partnered with the University of Waterloo to develop aluminum-scandium alloys for additive manufacturing applications. The collaboration between Scandium+ and Waterloo’s Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (MSAM) will initially focus on establishing manufacturing parameters for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) metal 3D printing. The project aims to expand the commercial adoption of aluminum-scandium alloys while reducing production costs. Known for their high strength, lightweight properties and resistance to cracking, aluminum-scandium alloys are considered attractive for aerospace and defense applications. The initiative will also support the development of a North American scandium supply chain and generate technical data needed for wider industrial adoption.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Toyota Establishes Closed-Loop Aluminum Recycling System for Hybrid Vehicle Production in UK
Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has established a closed-loop aluminum recycling system at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, creating what it describes as a European-first process for recovering aluminum from end-of-life vehicles and reusing it in new hybrid vehicle production. Recycled aluminum from discarded alloy wheels is sent to Toyota’s Deeside engine plant in Wales, where it is processed into hybrid powertrain components before returning to Burnaston for installation in new Corolla vehicles. Toyota produced its first vehicle containing recycled aluminum from this system on March 19, 2026. The Burnaston facility serves as a pilot site, with a second Circular Factory planned for Wałbrzych, Poland, later this year.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] MBK Completes Acquisition of Japan’s Aluminum Packaging Producer Altemira
MBK Partners has completed its acquisition of Japanese aluminum packaging producer Altemira Holdings from Apollo Global Management in a deal valued at approximately JPY130 billion (USD811 million). The transaction cleared Japan’s economic security review despite Altemira’s exposure to lithium-ion battery materials. Formed in 2022 through the integration of aluminum businesses from Resonac Holdings and Mitsubishi Materials, Altemira produces aluminum cans, foil, rolled and extruded products while operating a comprehensive recycling network. Industry observers noted that the deal faced fewer national security concerns than MBK’s previously withdrawn bid for Makino Milling Machine. MBK plans to leverage Altemira’s manufacturing and recycling assets in Japan and Vietnam to expand across Asia and grow higher-value industrial aluminum products.
