Rare Earth New Material Temperature-Regulating Fiber Opens a 100 Billion Yuan Market

On March 12, in the production workshop of the Textile Material R&D Center at the Tianjin Branch of Baotou Rare Earth Research Institute, intelligent spinning equipment was operating at full capacity. Late into the night, the workshop remained brightly lit as workers rushed to complete the first batch of 100,000 meters of rare earth-based cooling protective fabric with "portable air conditioning" functionality. These innovative fabrics, integrating rare earth black technology, will be made into work T-shirts, providing relief to workers at Baotou Steel Group who labor in high-temperature environments.

Behind this seemingly ordinary T-shirt lies a groundbreaking breakthrough by Chinese researchers in the application of rare earth functional materials: the "Rare Earth Infrared Reflective Hollow Insulating Polyamide Fiber," jointly developed by the Tianjin Branch of Baotou Rare Earth Research Institute and Tianjin Textile Science. Through a unique dual-effect cooling mechanism of "reflective insulation + transmissive heat dissipation," cutting-edge aerospace thermal control technology has been successfully introduced into the civilian textile sector. Recently, this achievement was awarded the "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Achievements of 2024" by the China Textile Science Research Institute. Its core innovation lies in the construction of a rare earth element ratio model, enabling the fiber to reflect over 90% of solar radiation heat in the 400~2500nm wavelength range while achieving 93% infrared transmittance in the 8~13μm atmospheric window, creating a continuous active cooling effect. Third-party testing shows that fabrics using this technology can reduce perceived body temperature by 3℃~5℃, with cooling durability exceeding national standards by two times, and maintaining stable performance after 50 washes.

"Traditional cooling fabrics are like applying sunscreen on the surface of the cloth, while our technology turns every fiber into a miniature air conditioner," explained Shi Wenjing, Director of the Textile Material R&D Center at the Tianjin Branch of Baotou Rare Earth Research Institute, using a vivid analogy. She noted that the R&D team spent two years overcoming key technologies such as rare earth nano-dispersion and multi-level pore structure design. 有关市场分析显示,全球调温纤维市场规模已突破千亿元,而我国稀土功能纺织品渗透率尚不足1%。这组数据的强烈反差,折射出“稀土+纺织”创新组合的巨大想象空间。当稀土功能材料从实验室“走进”纺织车间,当热力学方程转化为普罗大众的切实体感,这场以原子级材料设计为起点的技术革命,重新定义了“穿在身上的科技”内涵,也正在内蒙古掀起一场产业变革浪潮。

包头稀土高新区相关负责人介绍,相关项目生产线正在建设中,未来将通过表面修饰的稀土纳米颗粒与高分子材料的分子级复合技术,实现稀土蓄热、隔热、抗紫外线等多功能母粒的规模化生产。据项目规划,2025年全面建成后,其热管理母粒年产能将跃升至现有水平的5倍。
