Electrolytic Cell Upgrade Project for Press Metal Group Achieves Major Milestone

The electrolytic cell upgrade project for the Press Metal Group, designed by the Shenyang Aluminum and Magnesium Institute, has recently made significant progress. The first new energy-saving cathode technology electrolytic cell successfully started production. After four days of baking, liquid electrolyte was smoothly injected, completing the startup.

Press Metal Group is the largest aluminum products producer in Southeast Asia and an important partner in the Chalco Group's "Going Global" strategy, actively participated by the Shenyang Aluminum and Magnesium Institute. The group owns two smelters in Malaysia, with an annual primary aluminum production capacity of 1.08 million mt.

The new energy-saving cathode technology, independently developed by the Shenyang Aluminum and Magnesium Institute, aims to reduce the DC power consumption of aluminum liquid and improve the current efficiency of the electrolytic cell. It is expected that this technology will save 500 kWh of DC power consumption per mt of aluminum. Upon full implementation, it is estimated that the annual electricity savings could exceed 160 million kWh, bringing significant economic and environmental protection benefits.
