On 22 March, Lithium Argentina held its first earnings call after its separation from the former Lithium Americas Corporation. Now as an independent publicly traded company, the company has laid out future roadmaps for investors and the market.
Focusing on the lithium business in South America, the company has three assets in Argentina, the lithium carbonate producing Cauchari-Olaroz project, the Pastos Grandes and Sal de la Puna projects which are in development.
According to the company, Cauchari-Olaroz is progressing well regarding the ramp-up. It had produced around 6,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate since June 2023, reaching a 99.5% grade at 50% capacity. The project is expected to produce 20,000 tonnes of carbonate in 2024. By the end of this year, it will operate at near full nameplate capacity, which means 40,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate per year.
The industrial leader Ganfeng Lithium shows presence in Lithium Argentina's assets. Ganfeng owns a 46.7% stake in Cauchari-Olaroz, and supports the operation through technologies and financial resources. According to the latest disclosure, Ganfeng had also agreed to invest US$70 million for a 15% stake in the Pastos Grandes project to further consolidate the partnerships.
Facing the lithium market volatilities and the over-supply in the near term, the executives addressed several concerns including product grade and volume trade-off, ability to generate positive cash flows given the current lithium price, and future capital expenditure. While no specific figures regarding costs and sales were disclosed to give a clearer picture as Lithium Argentina has just embarked its journey, the company and its partnership show confidence and potential on navigating the lithium cycle.
