Wood Mackenzie's analysis of the lithium market has caused a stir in the industry, Lending consortia, including Federal Bank, West Pacific Bank, and National Australia Bank, withdrew a 760 million Australian dollar loan provided to the Australian lithium miner Liontown in October due to the consulting firm's analysis that lithium prices would remain low for the next five years. According to the consulting firm's analysis, lithium prices are expected to remain low for the next five years, leading to a 22% drop in Liontown's stock price and forcing the miner to review its financing arrangements.
This controversial analysis has divided industry insiders, with some believing that oversupply will keep prices low while others argue that supply and demand for lithium ore will remain relatively balancedas a large portion of lithium salt production is tied to purchase agreements with stable supply chains.
The downturn in the lithium industry has prompted other Australian miners to reduce production and adjust investments in future projects. Liontown has stated that it has enough funding to complete its current project but may face funding challenges if operations result in negative cash flow following the loan withdrawal.
In terms of current spot prices, the overall trend of the CIF price of lithium spodumene concentrate, according to SMM and market research, remains relatively stable. Due to the recent stabilization of lithium salt prices, Australian mines have a stable expectation for monthly priced lithium spodumene long-term contracts. However, due to the belief of some domestic buyers that lithium prices will continue to decline in February and March, there is still some pressure on pricing when negotiating with the mines. However, sellers' price reductions are currently limited, resulting in a general lack of enthusiasm for long-term deliveries from some lithium salt factories, and recent transactions have been sluggish. Some Australian and Brazilian mines have reported weak demand for first-quarter deliveries from some domestic lithium salt factories. Based on the fourth-quarter financial reports of various mines, reducing production costs has become the main theme for 2024. Whether it is Core Lithium, which previously announced the cessation of spodumene production, or cash-rich Pilbara and MRL, they all anticipate a decrease in future cost expenditure. Therefore, if lithium salt prices decline again after the Spring Festival due to lower-than-expected end demand, the import price of lithium spodumene is expected to have some room for further decline.
