As reported on November 28, the leader of a major Chilean mining association, Joaquin Villarino, warns of missed opportunities as Chile’s neighbor Argentina emphasizes its proactive lithium initiatives. Villarino has urged the government to quicken the development of the lithium sector, beyond its current focus on SQM and Albemarle.
Although Chile is the world’s second biggest lithium producer, the industry has been held back by a lack of projects in the pipeline under President Boric’s direction moving towards public-private partnerships in lithium mining. With SQM and Albemarle in negotiations with Chile’s government regarding contract renewals, other potential lithium projects have remained underexplored so far. Chile’s lithium sector is at a pivotal juncture, needing to strike a balance between maintaining strategic control over this critical resource and fostering a pro-investment environment.
