SHANGHAI, Jun 5 (SMM) – The SMM weighted alumina index stood at 2,844 yuan/mt as of last Friday, down 17 yuan/mt from a week ago.
Transactions in north China still mainly occurred in Shandong and Shanxi. Three deals were made in Shanxi, with a combined volume of 25,000 mt and prices between 2,810-2,825 yuan/mt, bound for Xinjiang. Two deals were made in Shandong, with a combined volume of 10,000 mt and prices between 2,780-2,800 yuan/mt, bound for Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. The lowest price in north China has fallen below 2,800 yuan/mt. Sellers were traders, while buyers were aluminium smelters. The ramp-up of new alumina capacity in Hebei and Shandong has intensified market pessimism and put sellers in a bad position. Alumina refineries in Shanxi and Henan cut caustic soda prices by 100 yuan/mt on average (100% concentration) in early June, reducing alumina costs by 5-10 yuan/mt. Alumina prices fell at a faster pace than costs, making high-cost refineries suffer the most. Alumina prices will remain in a downward path this week.
