According to foreign news on April 27, sources directly involved in pricing negotiations said that the aluminium premium paid by Japanese buyers in the April-June quarter was finalised at $125-130 per ton, an increase of 45-53% from the previous quarter. Premiums in other parts of Asia have risen.
The aluminium premiums in the first quarter were $85-86 per ton, the first rise in six quarters.
Japan is the largest aluminium importer in Asia.
The quarterly premium for primary aluminium that Japanese buyers agree to pay over LME cash is considered a regional pricing standard.
