SHANGHAI, Feb 8 (SMM) - In terms of supply, China's lithium carbonate smelting capacity will see a sharp increase in 2023-2024 thanks to growing mine output and intensive capacity ramp-ups. Compared with salt lakes, spodumene-based and lepidolite-based smelters will be the major driving force to lithium carbonate output growth.
In terms of demand, the demand for lithium carbonate in the first quarter of 2023 is forecast to rise by 15% year-on-year. In fact, the sluggish electronics market has weighed on the demand for LCO and LMO, while the demand for ternary battery from the NEV sector has also retreated significantly. In this context, the LFP battery will be the main contributor to lithium carbonate demand in the future. It is expected that the demand for LFP will increase by 63% in the first quarter.
