SHANGHAI, Jun 10(SMM) -
A group of Peruvian indigenous communities said on June 9 that they would lift protests against MMG Ltd's Las Bambas copper mine, which has been forced to shut down for more than 50 days, the longest in the mine's history.
Peru is the world's second-largest copper producer, and Las Bambas is one of the world's largest producers of copper.
The worst crisis in Las Bambas was caused by protests by the communities of Fuerabamba and Huancuire, which entered the mine in mid-April and settled inside, forcing Las Bambas to suspend operations. Although Fuerabamba was evicted shortly after that, Huancuire has managed to remain inside the mine until now.
The leaders of Fuerabamba and Huancuire said in a meeting with government and company representatives on Thursday that they were willing to approve a 30-day truce in exchange for a new round of negotiations.
