According to the website of the Siberian branch of the Russian National Academy of Sciences, researchers from the Institute of strong electricity and the Tomsk Science Center of the Siberian branch of the Russian National Academy of Sciences have cooperated with Milan University of Technology to treat the surface of magnesium alloy with electron beam. it can improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy several times. The results are published in the journal Surface and Coatings Technology.
According to researchers, magnesium alloys are widely used in aerospace and transportation industries. But its wear resistance and corrosion resistance are poor. For example, magnesium aluminum alloy, which is widely used, contains 90% magnesium, 6% Mel 8% aluminum and other metal elements. The structure of the alloy is heterogeneous, and the intermetallic phase can be detected on the surface, which is easily affected by external corrosion. Researchers use different irradiation modes to process different grades of magnesium alloys. Under electron beam irradiation, the outermost layer of the alloy surface begins to melt, the intermetallic phase dissolves, and the aluminum enrichment mode occurs on the alloy surface. Its strength and corrosion resistance are significantly improved. After repeated experiments, the researchers summed up the best mode of electron beam irradiation.
