European electric vehicle sales surged 171% in August

SMM: it is reported that in August 2020, European electric vehicle sales showed eye-catching again. In that month, the number of new passenger electric vehicle registrations in the European market was close to 97500, an increase of 171% compared with the same period last year.

August sales fell from a record July, but the market share of electric cars rose to 11%, meaning that one out of every 10 new cars sold is electric (pure electric or plug-in hybrid).

In that month, sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe were almost the same, of which pure electric vehicles accounted for 51.5% of sales, with more than 50,000 units sold, while plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 48.5% of sales. However, plug-in hybrid vehicles have risen by 285%, while pure electric vehicles have increased by only 112%, so the former is likely to become the mainstream model in the European electric car market in the near future.

As Renault Zoe sales fell in August (to 6183 units), Tesla became the highest-selling electric car in Europe that month, with sales of 7020 units. In third place is the Ford Kuga PHEV (, which sells 5055 vehicles called the Ford Escape PHEV), in the US market.

In the first eight months of this year, the cumulative sales of electric vehicles in Europe were close to 612000, with an average market share of 8.4%, and it is still on the rise. Renault Zoe and Tesla Model 3 are vying for the title of top seller this year in the 2020 cumulative model sales rankings. As of August, Renault Zoe took the lead, with cumulative sales of 52150 vehicles, while Tesla Model 3 sold 41047 vehicles. In third place was Volkswagen's eMuq Golf, with cumulative sales of 24489 vehicles. Outside the top three, Mitsubishi Orlander (Outlander) PHEV fell from No. 4 to No. 7 in a month, overtaken by Hyundai Kona Electric, Audi e-tron and Ford Kuga PHEV. These three models are likely to overtake the eMuGolf soon, which will stop production after the Volkswagen ID.3 increases production capacity.

Samsung SDI is converting part of the production lines at StarPlus Energy, its U.S. electric vehicle battery joint venture plant, to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage systems (ESS). The conversion applies to part of the lines at StarPlus Energy Plant 1. Rather than adding a separate new production line, Samsung SDI is modifying existing high-nickel nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) battery lines to accommodate LFP battery production.
