SMM9, March 8: tensions between Chile's national copper industry and trade unions are escalating. It is reported that the unions are dissatisfied with the prevention and control measures taken by Codelco in response to the epidemic and the pricing of insurance premiums.

(FTC), the copper workers' union representing the unions of mining companies, said Codelco was violating the legitimate rights and interests of workers.

Workers at Chile's national copper (Codelco) said on Friday that they would take action against these "job threats".

Octavio Araneda, chief executive of Codelco, said Codelco was committed to automation to increase productivity, and the possible layoffs also caused resentment among unions.

As a result of the epidemic, Codelco7's monthly copper production fell, up 1 per cent from a month earlier and 4.4 per cent lower than a year earlier to 133300 tonnes, after a cumulative 2.3 per cent year-on-year increase in copper production in the first seven months.
