The Worldsteel Association (worldsteel) has announced publication of Steel Statistical Yearbook 2016.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Worldsteel Association (worldsteel) has announced publication of Steel Statistical Yearbook 2016.

The global crude steel production totaled 1,620.408 million metric tonnes (Mt) in 2015. The Asian crude steel production totaled 1,112.872 million tonnes during the year. The region-wise crude steel production break up is as follows: EU-28 (166.115 Mt), Other Europe (36.178 Mt), CIS (101.552 Mt), North America (110.945 Mt), South America (43.899 Mt), Africa (13.701 Mt), Middle East (29.429 Mt) and Oceania (5.717 Mt).

Out of this, production by oxygen-blown convertors totaled 1,201.531 Mt during the year. 937.714 Mt of production was by Asian region. The details of production of crude steel in oxygen-blown convertors by other regions are as follows: EU-28 (100.619 Mt), Other Europe (12.809 Mt), CIS (67.054 Mt), North America (41.524 Mt), South America (29.886 Mt), Africa (5.138 Mt), Middle East (2.407 Mt) and Oceania (4.380 Mt).

Production of crude steel by electric furnaces totaled 408.670 Mt during the entire year 2015. The key producers were Asia (173.204 Mt) North America (69.421 Mt) and EU-28 (65.375 Mt). The output by other regions was Other Europe (23.490 Mt), CIS (26.959 Mt), South America (13.479 Mt), Africa (8.562 Mt), Middle East (27.022 Mt) and Oceania (1.337 Mt).

The crude steel production in Open Hearth Furnaces totaled 6.853 Mt during the year. CIS region accounted for the full Open Hearth Furnaces output. The estimated output by Russia totaled 1.671 Mt, whereas the output by Ukraine totaled 5.181 Mt.

Product-wise, the global output of hot-rolled products totaled 1, 5461.402 Mt. Asian region’s hot rolled products output totaled 1, 153.617 Mt. The EU-28 region accounted for 153.172 Mt, whereas Other Europe produced 1.270 Mt of hot rolled products during 2015. The region-wise output is summarized as below: CIS (67.185 Mt), North America (110.219 Mt), South America (33.558 Mt), Africa (16.216 Mt), Middle East (24.876 Mt) and Oceania (750,000 t). The production of hot rolled long products totaled 809.418 Mt, whereas the hot rolled flat products output totaled 737.121 Mt.

The world production of steel ingots including all qualities-carbon, stainless steel and other alloy totaled 58.487 Mt, with Asia accounting for 28.762 Mt. The production by other regions was as follows: EU-28 (4.991 Mt), Other Europe (Nil), CIS (23.262 Mt), North America (1.091 Mt), South America (317,000 t), Africa (37,000 t) and Oceania (26,000 t).

Exports of semi-finished and finished steel products totaled 462.379 Mt. Asia (212.088 Mt) and EU-28 (140.040 Mt) were the key exporters during 2015. Exports of Ingots and Semis totaled 51.907 Mt. Exports of long products totaled 135.856 Mt. The exports of flat products totaled 233.494 Mt. Exports of tubular products totaled 39.206 Mt. On the other hand, imports of semi-finished and finished steel products totaled 453.536 Mt. The primary importers were Asia (141.475 Mt) and EU-28 (139.784 Mt). The worldwide import of Ingots and Semis totaled 56.592 Mt. Long products import totaled 124.586 Mt. Imports of flat products totaled 232.236 Mt. Tubular products import totaled 39.142 Mt.

Production of pig iron totaled 1, 157.282 Mt. Exports of pig iron by world countries during the year totaled 13.019 Mt, whereas imports totaled 12.839 Mt. The production of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) totaled 69.540 Mt in 2015. The exports totaled 6.919 Mt. The DRI imports totaled 6.381 Mt.

A licença de mineração é válida de 3 de agosto de 2026 a 30 de agosto de 2043.

Em 21 de setembro, a Korea Zinc anunciou que seu projeto de manufatura nos EUA, no valor de US$ 7,4 bilhões, havia passado na avaliação de impacto ambiental. A instalação está programada para iniciar operações de teste em 2029 e produção comercial no ano seguinte, produzindo 11 minerais críticos, 12 metais não ferrosos e ácido sulfúrico de grau semicondutor. Em abril, a Korea Zinc informou que havia concluído a aquisição de uma fundição local de zinco e outras empresas relacionadas. A empresa planeja implementar o projeto expandindo e modernizando as instalações existentes.

On September 9, 2026, Australia initiated its second sunset review of anti-dumping measures on galvanized steel sheet from India, Malaysia and Vietnam, and separately launched a sunset review of countervailing measures on imports from India. The review covers July 2025-June 2026, with the final report expected by February 11, 2027. As galvanized steel is the largest end-use sector for zinc, the measures directly affect export costs and competitiveness, potentially impacting Australia’s domestic zinc demand and supply chain. Maintaining the duties would provide some protection for domestic steel and coating capacity, while termination could increase low-priced imports and affect regional zinc consumption. The final outcome remains subject to the authorities’ determination.
