China to Lower Industrial Land Prices to Boost Investment

BEIJING, May 15 -- Chinese shipbuilders built 9.54 million deadweight tons (DWT) of ships from January to April, up 54 percent on year, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Major ship builders of the country posted 156.8 billion yuan of output value, up 39.4 percent on year, a growth rate that is 18 percentage points lower than the same period last year.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Their export delivery value came to 75.44 billion yuan, up 28.9 percent from the same period last year, but the growth rate was down 37 percentage points on year.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Side struck by the financial crisis, Chinese shipbuilders saw new orders declining 95 percent to 990,000 DWT in the first four months, with only 200,000 DWT of new orders in April.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The order book, however, remains sufficient, amounting to 19.471 million DWT, up 7 percent on year by end-April.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "By the end of April, the order book of shipyards across the world came to 9,454 ships or 557.0176 million DWT, down 2.35 percent from the same period last year, marking the first year-on-year decline and the seventh monthly drop," Gao Xiaochun, analyst with CITICS, said in a report.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Monthly transactions of new ships have stayed below 1 million DWT for six months and are unlikely to rise in the first half of this year, he said.
