Chile Codelco Says No Damage From 6.2-Magnitude Quake

SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--State copper giant Corporacion Nacional de Cobre's mines in northern Chile didn't suffer any damages following a strong earthquake Sunday night, a company official said.

The quake, with a magnitude of 6.2, was felt at 20:11 local time, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the temblor was located 78 kilometers east north-east of the city of Calama, where the company's massive Norte division is housed.

"There weren't any problems and the quake was pretty short," said a spokesman for the mining firm known as Codelco.

The copper miner, the world's largest, last year produced about 1.7 million metric tons of the red metal.

Other large mining outfits in northern Chile also reported that operations were normal.

Officials from the Collahuasi mine, controlled by diversified miners Xstrata PLC (XTA.LN) and Anglo American PLC (AAL.LN), and Escondida, controlled by BHP Billliton Ltd. (BHP), told Dow Jones no damages were reported.
