2009 August Al Output Data Analysis

SHANGHAI, Sept. 25 (SMM) --
Alumina:
According to CNIA, China's output of alumina was 2.06 million mt during August, down 4.46% YoY, but up 9.76% MoM, due mainly to relatively low output in July.  In addition, alumina output increased significantly compared to June, reflecting an increase in restarting of alumina capacity.  The recent monthly output of over 2 million mt is believed to represent a current online alumina capacity of over 24.2 million/yr.
Aluminum:
According to CNIA, China's aluminum output was 1.15 million mt during August, down 3.14% YoY, but up 6% MoM, also reflecting the increase in restarts of domestic aluminum capacity. According to a CBI survey investigating changes in domestic aluminum capacity, the growth rate of aluminum output will remain high until October, and then begin to slow.
