Maintenance Cuts Fail to Reverse Weak Demand; Iron Ore Futures and Spot Prices Decline Together [SMM Iron Ore Daily Review]

Published: Nov 03, 2026 17:18 (GMT+8)
Iron ore futures consolidated on a subdued note today, with the most-traded DCE I2701 contract closing at 671 yuan/mt, down 0.74% from the previous trading day. Spot prices at Qingdao Port fell by an average of about 2-5 yuan/mt. Trader activity was moderate, steel mills purchased as needed, and overall spot transactions were average.
Supply side, according to SMM statistics, total iron ore production from major ex-China mines in Q3 2026 was 292.5 million mt, down 1% QoQ and down 2% YoY. Combined shipments from the four major mines totaled 292.72 million mt, basically flat QoQ and up 1% YoY. Full-year volume guidance for all four miners remained unchanged, and shipments from major mines are likely to stay high in Q4.
Demand side, according to SMM statistics, the impact from blast furnace maintenance on hot metal output this week (Oct 31-Nov 6) was 1.6983 million mt, down 57,900 mt WoW. Next week (Nov 7-13), it is expected to be 1.685 million mt, down another 13,300 mt WoW. Although the impact from maintenance has narrowed, the decline is limited. Combined with steel mills still in losses and environmental protection-driven production restrictions in the north, room for a hot metal rebound is limited. Overall, shipments on the supply side stay high, while the demand side lacks clear growth, with both futures and spot prices weakening in tandem. In the short term, iron ore prices are likely to continue consolidating on a subdued note, with attention needed on long-term contract negotiation news and the progress of environmental protection-driven production restrictions in the north. [ArcelorMittal Advances Liberia Iron Ore Expansion with Country's First Concentrator]
ArcelorMittal is expanding its iron ore operations in Liberia, with plans to build the country's first iron ore concentrator alongside major infrastructure works including rail and port facilities. The expansion covers mining, rail and port assets with an investment footprint of nearly US$4 billion, and is intended to support higher volumes of premium iron ore exports to international steel markets. Under the company's export target, its Liberian volumes are to rise from less than 5 million mt in 2024 to above 20 million mt in 2027. [SMM Iron Ore]

[SMM Sheets & Plates Daily Review] Cost decline vs.supply contraction expectations, futures pulled back again intraday
HRC futures remained weak and fluctuated today, with the most-traded HC2701 contract closing at 3,147 yuan/mt, down 0.54% intraday. Spot market transaction prices fell 10 yuan/mt from the previous session, with intraday deals generally on the weak side. News flow was mixed. Intraday reports said Mongolian coal customs clearance resumed, leading coking coal lower. Meanwhile, talk that coke producers would stabilize prices and ensure supply, and that the three major mills would make additional production cuts of 5%-8%, both underpinned finished steel prices and capped the upside. In terms of supply, HRC impact from maintenance this week was 144,400 mt, up 17,100 mt WoW. Next week, HRC impact from maintenance is expected at 218,300 mt, up 74,000 mt WoW, with production continuing to pull back. On the demand side, northern regions are gradually entering the construction off-season, outdoor project procurement volume is seeing a seasonal pullback, and the slower pace of manufacturing order recovery is keeping sheets and coils under pressure. With cost decline offsetting supply contraction expectations, HRC prices are expected to remain in the doldrums in the near term, with focus on whether market news actually materializes.
