[CATL's Zeng: battery 'not good enough', AI accelerating discovery]

Published: Oct 31, 2026 23:05 (GMT+8)
At the opening forum of the 2026 World Laureates Forum on Oct 31, CATL chairman and founder Robin Zeng said existing battery energy density remains insufficient for broader applications, and the industry needs AI and global scientific talent to accelerate source innovation in electrochemistry. He described battery systems as highly complex, spanning femtosecond-to-decade timescales and multiple atomic-level dimensions, and said CATL is applying large language models to scientific discovery, drawing on 1+ trillion test data records and an in-house AI-native research system that connects wet and dry laboratories. He added that efforts so far are "not yet enough," with particular support needed from electrochemists.

[German Battery Storage Revenue Rebounds in September; Cross-Market Optimization Slightly Above August]
suena energy’s simulation for a representative 10 MW/20 MWh standalone battery in Germany shows September wholesale revenue rebounded from August. Continuous intraday income rose 36% MoM to EUR 17.5k/MW/month; day-ahead and intraday auctions reached EUR 13.8k and EUR 13.2k/MW/month, and the stacked wholesale strategy earned EUR 20.9k/MW/month. Cross-market optimization generated EUR 25.5k/MW/month, slightly above August’s EUR 25.3k and 22% above the stacked wholesale benchmark. Day-ahead prices averaged EUR 144.80/MWh, about EUR 18/MWh above August and over 50% higher than September 2025; the two-hour battery’s top-bottom spread was about EUR 220/MWh, the widest since 2022. Positive aFRR revenue rose 50% to EUR 8.4k/MW/month.

[Portland General Electric Signs Build-Transfer Agreements for Bigelow and Salmonfly Solar-Plus-Storage Projects]
PGE said on its Q3 2026 earnings call that it signed build-transfer agreements for the Bigelow and Salmonfly solar-plus-storage projects. Bigelow includes 200 MW of solar and 250 MW of battery storage, with estimated investment of 900 million USD; Salmonfly includes 199 MW of solar and 199 MW of storage, with estimated investment of 850 million USD, totaling 1.75 billion USD. The agreements took effect after the reporting period and were not in the prior five-year capital plan; including them, PGE expects about 2.5 billion USD of 2027 capex. PGE expects battery storage capacity to exceed 1,000 MW after completing current procurement and PPAs, versus peak load of about 4,500 MW. Management is monitoring higher battery storage prices; signed or under-construction projects benefit from earlier pricing.

[SMM Analysis] Rush to Export or Wait for Price Cuts? The Energy Storage Stockpiling Game Under a Six-Point Tax Rebate Difference
[SMM Analysis] With the export tax rebate window approaching, energy storage enterprises are weighing the benefits of early delivery against the gains from waiting for price reductions. Near-term utility-scale energy storage projects may become the main force in the rush to export, while residential ESS is constrained by channel inventory and destocking pressure, focusing mainly on filling gaps. Year-end deliveries may warm up mildly, with the actual intensity depending on project maturity, channel turnover, and holding costs.
