Iron ore futures moved sideways today. The most-traded DCE I2701 contract closed at 681.5 yuan/mt, flat from the previous trading day. Spot prices at Qingdao Port were basically flat, trader activity was decent, and steel mills purchased as needed.
Demand side, according to an SMM survey, as of October 21, the blast furnace operating rate at the 242 sampled steel mills was 87.16%, up 0.13 percentage point WoW. The blast furnace capacity utilization rate was 87.05%, up 0.24 percentage point WoW. Daily average hot metal production was 2.3584 million mt, up 6,400 mt WoW. This week, two blast furnaces underwent maintenance and two resumed production. Steel mill losses have narrowed recently. If the blast furnaces under maintenance resume production as planned next week, hot metal production may edge up. Overall, the slight rebound in hot metal provides some support to ore prices, but steel mills remain loss-making, procurement is mostly as-needed, and port inventories are high, so spot prices lack a basis for upward movement. In the short term, iron ore prices are likely to consolidate within a range. [SMM Steel]
