Preparatory Work Launched for 300,000 t/y Aktogay Copper Smelter in Kazakhstan

Published: Oct 21, 2026 17:07 (GMT+8)
On October 20, China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group (CNMC) Chairman Wen Gang met Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana and attended a ceremony marking the launch of preparatory work for the 300,000-tonne-per-year Aktogay copper smelter project. CNMC previously built the Aktogay and Bozshakol copper concentrators. The new project would expand Kazakhstan’s capacity to process copper concentrate domestically. The project remains at the preparatory stage. The supplied announcement did not specify construction or commissioning dates, or feedstock procurement arrangements. Once operational, the smelter could increase Kazakhstan’s copper smelting capacity and reshape concentrate export flows. It would add downstream processing capacity rather than new mined copper supply.
