[ SSAB Decommissions Oxelösund Blast Furnace for 1.2 Million Tonne EAF ]

Published: Oct 21, 2026 16:36 (GMT+8)
Swedish steelmaker SSAB permanently shut down its Oxelösund blast furnace on October 19, 2026, transitioning the facility entirely to electric arc furnace (EAF) technology. The new EAF possesses a designed capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of crude steel per year and is engineered to operate strictly on fossil-free sponge iron and recycled scrap. This structural conversion immediately removes 1.5 million tonnes of annual CO2 emissions and eliminates the site's historical demand for seaborne coking coal. [SMM Iron Ore]
