[Anthropic is reportedly offering Blackstone a yield of over 10% for its $60 billion chip financing]

Published: Oct 18, 2026 18:06 (GMT+8)
According to the Financial Times, Anthropic is offering Blackstone a yield of over 10% to raise funds for its latest chip deal. The $60 billion debt financing plan, codenamed "Project North Star," will help Anthropic procure about 1.5 GW of custom semiconductors developed by Google (TPUs) — expected to become the largest chip financing deal to date and a key test of investor demand for AI debt. Sources said Blackstone funds will invest $9 billion to buy debt backed by Anthropic's chip lease payments over the next five years, half of the roughly $18 billion in subordinated loans. The coupon quoted is 10%, with total yield higher still after the issuance discount and other fees. Per the ICE BofA BB US High Yield Index, similar-credit borrowers pay around 7% in the public bond market.

[AWS CFO: AI Spending Sustainable, Server Investment Payback Period Under Three Years]
According to Axios, AWS CFO John Felton said AI infrastructure and service spending is sustainable as the investments drive innovation and its AI capex generates returns. Enterprises should view AI as a productivity-boosting tool, not just a cost-cutter, he added. As of Q2, AWS's order backlog was approaching $500 billion, spanning large enterprises, AI labs, and SMEs, so Felton feels "comfortable" with capex plans, stressing "The demand is real." AWS's AI server investment payback period is under three years. On AI investment's continued returns, Felton cited internal data showing a "roughly linear relationship" between token usage and productivity gains. AWS has achieved "significant investment returns and productivity improvements" and plans to expand investments further.

The 2026 World Energy Storage Conference was held in Ningde, Fujian on the 14th–16th. Attendees said China's storage industry is moving from scale leadership to systematic global expansion, covering complete station solutions, IP protection, and full life-cycle O&M. Zou Ciyong, UNIDO representative, said in a video address that global new battery ESS installations reached 108 GW in 2025, up about 40% YoY, with new-type storage technologies moving rapidly from demonstration to large-scale deployment. Irina Stefanova, IRENA Action Alliance Director, said 2025 global annual new battery storage additions totaled about 307 GWh, with China accounting for 56%, "fully demonstrating the massive deployment scale of China's storage industry and its core position in the global market."

[South Korean Finance Minister: Semiconductor Market Boom to Last at Least Until Next Year]
South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyung-il said on Saturday that the semiconductor industry boom will continue at least until 2027. Speaking to CNBC on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Lee Hyung-il said, "At present, we judge that this round of growth can be sustained at least until next year. The reason is that the semiconductor supply-demand gap remains huge, and the supply side is still expanding." Lee Hyung-il said chip stocks have amplified fluctuations in the South Korean stock market this year. He noted that the semiconductor industry accounts for a higher share of the national economy than in other countries, which has caused wild swings in the market. But
