Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) inaugurated its greenfield ferrochrome project at Kalinganagar (KNR 1) in Odisha on October 14, in a ceremony performed by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The company said the project makes it India’s largest producer of value-added ferrochrome, with capacity of more than 500,000 tpa.
Construction began on May 22, 2025, and output from the first furnace was achieved on August 25, 2026, 458 days later. The project comprises 2 x 33 MVA submerged arc furnaces with 100,000 tpa of output and 8.7 MW of off-gas power generation. The closed furnaces are designed for stack particulate emissions below 30 mg/Nm³, and IMFA has a long-term agreement for hybrid renewable energy to reduce its carbon footprint.
Construction generated about 450,000 man-days of employment, and the project is expected to create 1,500 direct and indirect jobs. IMFA Managing Director Subhrakant Panda credited state government support for achieving first tapping of hot metal within 15 months, and said ferrochrome plays an important role in India’s manufacturing ambitions.
