Aluminum Prices Continue to Fall, Spot Premiums Against Next Month Rise Again [SMM Spot Aluminum Midday Review]

Published: Oct 15, 2026 16:04 (GMT+8)

SMM, October 15:

Intraday SHFE aluminum prices continued to decline, with the nearby-month BACK price spread between futures contracts fluctuating at 160-200 yuan/mt, and spot transaction sentiment was positive. The spot transaction center also continued to rise from the previous trading day. Spot prices against the SHFE aluminum 2611 contract were at a premium of 270-290 yuan/mt.

The far-month price spread between SHFE aluminum futures contracts continued to widen. In the central China market, suppliers became increasingly eager to quickly sell off their inventory, with little sentiment to hold prices firm. Meanwhile, downstream processing enterprises, constrained by the tail end of the peak season, saw terminal order demand consistently fall short of expectations, maintaining rigid, small-volume procurement. Market quotes continued to trend lower. Ultimately, the actual transaction price range in the central China market was around a premium of 150-170 yuan/mt against the SHFE aluminum November contract.

South32 Shareholders Approve $5.6B Sale of Aluminum Assets to Alcoa
[SMM Aluminum Express News] South32 shareholders approve up to US$5.6 billion sale of aluminum assets to Alcoa. Australian mining company South32 announced on October 15 that shareholders approved the proposed sale of its aluminum value chain assets to Alcoa at its 2026 Annual General Meeting, marking a major milestone towards completing the transaction. The deal, valued at up to US$5.6 billion, covers South32's interests in Worsley Alumina and Hillside Aluminium, as well as Brazil's MRN bauxite mine, Alumar alumina refinery and aluminum smelter. The MRN stake transfer remains subject to pre-emptive rights held by its partners. The transaction will significantly expand Alcoa's exposure to bauxite, alumina and primary aluminum production, while South32 shifts its focus towards copper, zinc, silver, lead and manganese. Shareholder approval does not mean the transaction has closed, with remaining conditions still to be satisfied. The deal primarily represents a change in asset ownership rather than an immediate increase in global aluminum or alumina production.
