India’s draft National Steel Policy-Vision 2047 projects annual coking coal demand to rise to 236 million tonnes by 2047, from 72 million tonnes currently, as the country expands its steelmaking capacity.
India imports around 92% of its coking coal requirements. The draft policy proposes diversifying supply sources through overseas asset acquisitions, expanding domestic coal washeries, securing long-term supply arrangements and optimising coal blends to reduce import dependence.
