[ EU Steel Imports Contract by 5% in First Half of 2026 ]

Published: Oct 07, 2026 13:52 (GMT+8)
The European Steel Association (EUROFER) confirmed on October 5, 2026, that total steel imports into the European Union contracted by 5% year-on-year during the first half of the year. Specifically, imports of finished steel products dropped by 3%, driven heavily by an 18% crash in long product shipments, including a 23% plunge in rebar and a 47% collapse in heavy sections. The volumetric decline highlights persistently weak apparent steel consumption across the bloc's manufacturing and construction sectors, shielding local mills from excess global supply.
