OpenAI Says Deepening Cooperation with Samsung Electronics to Jointly Develop Next-Generation Chips]

Published: Sep 09, 2026 17:12 (GMT+8)
As OpenAI advances its in-house chip R&D, the company is deepening its cooperation with Samsung Electronics, expanding the partnership into semiconductors and enterprise AI services. "One of the areas where we have made the most progress and received the most recognition in our cooperation with Samsung Electronics is the joint production and R&D of next-generation chips that both sides are advancing," Harrison Kim, OpenAI's general manager for South Korea, said at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday, without elaborating further. Samsung Electronics said in a statement that it could not confirm client-related information. Kim said that as more advanced chips are applied to faster and more complex computing tasks, demand for memory chips will continue to grow, making cooperation with South Korean semiconductor suppliers a priority for OpenAI's local office. OpenAI said that as of the end of August, the number of ChatGPT enterprise users among South Korean companies and institutions surged approximately 27-fold from a year earlier. As of the end of last year, South Korea was the country with the largest number of paid ChatGPT subscribers outside the US.

Semtech said in its Aug. 25 earnings presentation that its data-center photonics portfolio spans gain chips, high-power CW lasers, SOAs and high-speed photodiodes, while it has secured FY2027 equipment deliveries and acquired additional cleanroom space. Semtech acquired HieFo in March, adding US-based InP gain-chip and DFB-laser manufacturing. Q2 FY2027 data-center sales reached $100 million, up 39% QoQ and 91% YoY; Q3 sales are targeted to rise 45% QoQ and 160% YoY. SMM believes the buildout supports medium-term demand for InP and high-purity indium, although no nameplate capacity or indium consumption was disclosed.

DOWA Holdings plans to produce 113,543 tonnes of zinc in H2 FY2026, up 27.0% from its H1 plan of 89,373 tonnes and 26.8% from the 89,525 tonnes produced in H2 FY2025. Its Akita Zinc operation uses the hematite process to recover indium and other valuable metals at high yields and integrates zinc smelting with rare-metal production and recycling. Higher planned zinc output may increase feed throughput for by-product indium recovery. However, DOWA disclosed no indium production target, and any supply increase will depend on feed grades, recovery rates and operating schedules rather than zinc volumes alone.

Coherent launched PhotonLink, an integrated optics platform for AI infrastructure incorporating Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers, silicon photonics, detectors and optical modules. The company disclosed more than 10 CPO engagements, over 10 NPO engagements and more than five chip-to-chip connectivity projects, with anchor customers and long-term agreements secured for both CPO and NPO. Revenue is expected to begin ramping in Q4 2026. Coherent has shipped over 300 million InP lasers and is expanding its 6-inch InP manufacturing capacity to support the ramp. The customer pipeline provides a clearer commercial demand signal for InP devices and upstream materials, although additional capacity and indium consumption were not disclosed.
