[ Italy's ABS Opens Special Steel Service Center in Sweden ]

Italian steelmaker Acciaierie Bertoli Safau (ABS) expanded its Northern European footprint by inaugurating ABS Steel Nordic AB, a dedicated special steel service center in Sweden. The automated hub will process and distribute hot-rolled, cold-drawn, and forged special steel products ranging from 20mm to 300mm in diameter. Operating with material produced entirely via electric arc furnaces, the facility will provide customized carbon, quenched, and micro-alloyed steels directly to Scandinavian industrial and machining sectors.

[India Domestic] Domestic steel prices up amid tight supply while scrap prices remained mostly flat in major cities. Heavy rainfall and the impact of Cyclone Arnab have caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions in Raipur and nearby areas, affecting normal operations and movement. HMS 1&2 (80:20) unchanged 394 USD/tonne (37,800 INR/tonne) delivered Mandi. Durgapur billet up 2 USD/tonne (200 INR/tonne) to 455 USD/tonne (43,600 INR/tonne) delivered Durgapur. Sponge iron PDRI rose 4 USD/tonne (400 INR/tonne) to 294 USD/tonne (28,200 INR/tonne) EXW Raipur.

[ Global Crude Steel Production Falls 1.2% in August ]

Global crude steel production in August 2026 decreased by 1.2% year-on-year to 144.2 million tonnes, bringing the January-August total down 0.7% to 1.22 billion tonnes. India recorded a strong 4.6% increase to 14.8 million tonnes and the US saw a 3.0% rise to 7.3 million tonnes, offsetting declines in other regions. In contrast, output from the EU-27 dropped 1.0% to 8.9 million tonnes, while South America experienced a 4.9% decline led by lower Brazilian production.

[ Japanese August Crude Steel Output Rises Marginally to 6.66 Million Tonnes ]

Japan's crude steel output rose by 0.4% year-on-year in August 2026 to reach 6.66 million metric tons, although this represented a 3.9% month-on-month contraction. Domestic pig iron production simultaneously increased by 1.5% year-on-year to 5.07 million tonnes. Despite the slight annual gain in August, Japan's cumulative crude steel output for the first eight months of 2026 stood at 53.99 million tonnes, maintaining a marginal 0.2% deficit compared to the same period last year.
