Rare Earths Americas CEO: Non-Chinese Heavy Rare Earth Production Lags Behind Magnet Capacity Growth

Published: Sep 22, 2026 12:03 (GMT+8)
Heavy rare earth production outside China is lagging behind growing magnet capacity, Don Swartz, chief executive of Rare Earths Americas (REA), said in an exclusive interview with Fastmarkets on Monday August 31, but REA's projects will support future heavy rare earth demand. According to Swartz, 20,000-30,000 mt of magnet capacity will come online outside China. As more capacity comes onstream from 2030 to 2035, magnet companies need a stable supply of rare earths to produce. The growing magnet industry will drive demand for heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and terbium.

Rare earth prices move sideways; market trading sentiment is subdued [SMM Rare Earth Daily Review]
[SMM Rare Earth Daily Review: Rare earth prices move sideways, market trading sentiment remains subdued] In the short term, the Pr-Nd series lacks growth in transaction volume to drive momentum, and inquiry activity has pulled back, so prices are likely to continue consolidating steadily in the near term. Whether they can rise again will depend on the pace of downstream order releases. For medium-heavy rare earths, the continued weakness in terbium metal prices warrants attention as to whether it will further transmit to the oxide side. Dysprosium may face some pressure after raw material prices loosen, while holmium, erbium, and other varieties are still mainly moving sideways.
