[SMM Steel] Rising Indian HRC Prices Limit Interest in Low-Priced Southeast Asian Exports

Published: Sep 15, 2026 16:14
[India Export] Indian HRC sellers showed limited incentive to pursue low-priced sales to Southeast Asia on September 15. Indian HRC offers to Vietnam were heard at 550USD/tonne CFR, while Vietnamese domestic HRC offers stood at around 540–545USD/tonne CIF, depending on tonnage, limiting buyer interest in Indian seaborne material. Meanwhile, India’s firm and rising domestic market left sellers with little incentive to reduce their export offers unless they needed to move tonnage. European buyers also showed limited interest in Indian offers while awaiting clarity on quota availability, with material from other origins remaining more competitive. European domestic HRC prices were heard above approximately 849USD/tonne (735EUR/tonne) EXW. No fresh Indian export transaction was confirmed. In India, HRC prices were heard at approximately 626–631USD/tonne (60,000–60,500INR/tonne) EXW, while EX-yard prices reached approximately 667USD/tonne (64,000INR/tonne). Market participants reported that domestic prices continued to rise.

[UK Government Moves Towards Public Acquisition of Speciality Steel UK]
The UK government announced on September 14 that it will work towards the public acquisition of Speciality Steel UK (SSUK) after concluding that the proposed sale to the preferred private-sector bidder could not provide sufficient long-term stability, certainty or value for money. SSUK operates sites in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth and Wednesbury, supporting more than 1,300 jobs, and produces speciality steels used in the aerospace, defence, automotive and advanced-manufacturing sectors. The UK government's steel strategy lists SSUK's Rotherham operation with around 1.2Mtpa of electric-arc-furnace capacity. The government said any acquisition and future spending remain subject to due diligence, while options being considered include continued speciality-steel production, regeneration and future private investment. Separately, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds was reported as estimating that the overall intervention could cost around $472 million (£350 million), including creditor settlements, asset acquisition and working capital; however, this figure was not included in the government's formal announcement and should be treated as a reported estimate rather than a committed acquisition price.
