【Thyssenkrupp Takes Europe’s Largest Blast Furnace Offline for Six-Week Refurbishment】

Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe took the Schwelgern 2 blast furnace in Duisburg, Germany, offline as planned on August 30 for a partial refurbishment expected to last approximately six weeks. The work covers the central cooling systems, lower refractory lining and copper cooling components, as well as maintenance of auxiliary facilities including the gas cleaning and slag granulation systems. The project is intended to improve the furnace’s technical availability and long-term operating reliability.

Schwelgern 2 normally produces approximately 12,000 metric tons of hot metal per day. A mechanical calculation based on six weeks of downtime indicates gross hot-metal production exposure of around 504,000 metric tons. This should not be treated as confirmed production loss, as Thyssenkrupp did not disclose possible compensation from other furnaces, inventory adjustments or changes to its coke and coking coal procurement.
