Electra Strengthens Commercial Team to Advance Commercialization of North American Battery-Grade Cobalt Sulfate Refinery

Published: Sep 02, 2026 10:15 (GMT+8)

According to Electra Battery Materials on September 1, the company has appointed Douglas Geniti as Senior Advisor, Commercial Strategy, to support commercial planning for its North American cobalt sulfate refinery ahead of commissioning and ramp-up in 2027. Geniti has more than 35 years of experience in cobalt, nickel and minor metals, with a background covering global trading, raw material procurement, refining, logistics and customer contracts.

In his new role, he will focus on raw material sourcing strategy, customer development, product marketing and commercial agreements, with particular attention to the U.S. industrial, battery and defense markets. Electra’s cobalt sulfate refinery in Ontario, Canada, has an initial designed annual capacity of 5,120 tonnes of battery-grade cobalt sulfate and is currently under construction, with mechanical completion targeted for the second quarter of 2027.

The company has already secured all cobalt feedstock required for commissioning and ramp-up and continues to advance downstream customer engagement and long-term commercial partnerships. Electra said the project is intended to establish a domestic North American supply of battery-grade cobalt, reduce reliance on overseas refining supply chains, and serve growing demand from the battery, industrial and defense sectors. The company also plans to strengthen its commercial team to accelerate cooperation with both feedstock suppliers and end-users, laying the groundwork for stable operations and future production ramp-up.

SMM Daily Review: Spot lithium carbonate prices continued to edge up slightly on September 22
Today, SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate spot prices continued to edge up slightly from the previous trading day. The lithium carbonate 2701 contract opened higher today at 132,500 yuan/mt. After the open, bears briefly held the advantage, and prices consolidated lower, hitting a low of 130,200 yuan/mt. Subsequently, bargain hunting emerged at lows, and prices gradually rebounded. Around midday, bulls concentrated their efforts, and prices shot up rapidly to the day's high of 135,300 yuan/mt. In the afternoon, prices consolidated at highs, fluctuating repeatedly around 134,000 yuan/mt. Near the close, prices pulled back slightly, ultimately closing up 2.53% at 134,400 yuan/mt. Open interest was basically flat (up slightly by 84 lots). In the spot market, downstream buyers continued to purchase as needed at lows, but as prices drifted higher, buying enthusiasm turned more cautious. Upstream lithium chemical plants maintained their stance of holding prices firm and holding back from selling for spot orders. Overall, both market inquiries and actual transaction pace slowed down. On the news and sentiment front, the continued destocking of warrants, combined with confidence in short-term demand resilience, shifted sentiment from earlier pessimism to a slightly more positive tone, driving prices to drift higher.
