[SMM Coal Flash] Whitehaven FY26 ROM Coal Production Rises 3% to 40.3 Mt

Published: Aug 31, 2026 12:46
Australia’s Whitehaven Coal reported managed ROM coal production of 40.3 Mt in FY2026, up 3% year on year and near the top of its 37–41 Mt guidance, while equity sales of produced coal rose 8% to 26.0 Mt. June-quarter ROM production reached 10.7 Mt, up 13% QoQ, driven by a 41% recovery in Queensland output following weather disruptions in the previous quarter. FY26 revenue was 57% metallurgical coal and 43% thermal coal, while unit production costs were around A$132/t, near the low end of guidance. In the June quarter, Queensland operations achieved an average price of A$247/t, while NSW achieved A$197/t, with NSW thermal coal realisations reaching 104% of the gC NEWC index. Whitehaven said metallurgical coal markets were supported by Chinese supply concerns, while thermal coal prices benefited from energy-security concerns and uncertainty surrounding Indonesian coal production and exports.
