[SMM Energy Flash] Trianel Borkum I Enters German Balancing Market with 70 MW

Published: Aug 30, 2026 13:17
Germany’s Trianel Windpark Borkum I has prequalified around 70 MW of capacity for the country’s balancing energy market and has been providing negative secondary balancing reserve since July 2026, with marketing starting on July 22. Under the mechanism, the offshore wind farm can automatically reduce generation within five minutes when requested by transmission system operators, helping maintain grid frequency at 50 Hz while creating an additional revenue stream alongside electricity sales and PPAs.

[SMM Manganese Flash] Jupiter Highlights Strong FY2026 Performance at South Africa’s Tshipi Mine
ASX-listed Jupiter Mines said the Tshipi manganese mine in South Africa produced and sold 3.5 million tonnes in FY2026, exceeding its annual plan, supported by mine planning, stockpile management, coordinated processing and flexible logistics despite wet weather and rail disruptions. Manganese prices strengthened during the year amid supply concerns and higher energy costs, supporting earnings and higher-grade ore sales.

[SMM Gold Flash] Caledonia Announces Maiden Motapa Resource, Raises Blanket Gold Resource by 22%
Caledonia Mining has announced a maiden mineral resource estimate for its 100%-owned Motapa gold project in Zimbabwe, comprising 7.8 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 1.51 g/t for 379,000 oz of gold, plus 2.7 million tonnes of inferred resources grading 1.48 g/t for 131,000 oz. The company said Motapa’s proximity to the adjacent Bilboes project could support a larger operation or extend Bilboes’ planned production profile, with first gold at Bilboes expected in late 2028. Separately, Caledonia increased underground measured and indicated resources at its Blanket gold mine by 22% to 2.18 million oz, contained in 17.7 million tonnes grading 3.83 g/t.

[SMM PGM Flash] Northam Targets Fully Renewable Operations at South Africa’s Eland Mine
South Africa’s Northam Platinum aims to make its Eland PGM and chrome mine the country’s first PGM mine operating entirely on renewable energy, with site clearing already under way for an initial 20 MW solar facility that will later expand to 40 MW, expected to displace around 60,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The project forms part of Northam’s broader renewable-energy programme, which includes the operational 80 MW Zondereinde solar farm, the 140 MW Karreebosch wind farm, 255 MW Thakadu solar project and 360 MWh of planned industrial battery storage.
