[SMM PGM Flash] Northam Targets Fully Renewable Operations at South Africa’s Eland Mine

South Africa’s Northam Platinum aims to make its Eland PGM and chrome mine the country’s first PGM mine operating entirely on renewable energy, with site clearing already under way for an initial 20 MW solar facility that will later expand to 40 MW, expected to displace around 60,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The project forms part of Northam’s broader renewable-energy programme, which includes the operational 80 MW Zondereinde solar farm, the 140 MW Karreebosch wind farm, 255 MW Thakadu solar project and 360 MWh of planned industrial battery storage.

Caledonia Mining has announced a maiden mineral resource estimate for its 100%-owned Motapa gold project in Zimbabwe, comprising 7.8 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 1.51 g/t for 379,000 oz of gold, plus 2.7 million tonnes of inferred resources grading 1.48 g/t for 131,000 oz. The company said Motapa’s proximity to the adjacent Bilboes project could support a larger operation or extend Bilboes’ planned production profile, with first gold at Bilboes expected in late 2028. Separately, Caledonia increased underground measured and indicated resources at its Blanket gold mine by 22% to 2.18 million oz, contained in 17.7 million tonnes grading 3.83 g/t.

[SMM Copper Flash] McEwen Copper Secures US$240 Million Funding to Advance Los Azules Toward FID

McEwen Copper has closed a US$240 million senior secured four-year term loan, providing funding to advance engineering and early works at its Los Azules copper project in Argentina through the planned final investment decision (FID). The financing includes US$112 million from Sprott Natural Resource Investment Partners, with McEwen chairman Rob McEwen also participating. The company expects the FID and full project financing package around mid-2027, while commercial copper cathode production is targeted for 2030, subject to financing and customary approvals.
