SMM Nickel August 26 News:

Macro and Market News:

(1) Iran said the Strait of Hormuz will not open immediately, Oman agreed to close the southern waterway of Hormuz, and the two also issued a joint statement, planning to establish a mutually agreed safe maritime passage in the Strait of Hormuz.

(2) Shanghai: Expand the trading scale of key metal categories such as copper and aluminum, and accelerate the improvement of the futures variety sequence for emerging metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel.

Spot Market:

On August 26, the average price of SMM #1 refined nickel was 130,250 yuan/mt, up 450 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. In terms of spot premiums, the average of Jinchuan #1 refined nickel was 1,600 yuan/mt, up 50 yuan/mt from the previous trading day, and the domestic mainstream brand electrodeposited nickel ranged from 0-500 yuan/mt.

Futures Market:

The most-traded SHFE nickel 2610 contract moved sideways in early trading, closing at 129,310 yuan/mt, down 0.27%.

The expectations of Indonesia's quota supply release and high inventory formed pressure, but the weakening US dollar and cost support provided a floor. In the short term, the price range of the most-traded SHFE nickel contract is expected to be 127,000-132,000 yuan/mt.

Drought in Indonesia's Luwu Disrupts Nickel Smelter Operations, Increases Cost Pressure
[SMM Nickel Flash] August 26 - According to SMM, affected by drought weather, water supply in Indonesia's Luwu region has become tight. Water and power supply to some local nickel smelters have been disrupted, leading to production cuts. While smelters in the IMIP and IWIP industrial parks face water shortage issues, there has been no substantial impact on their production so far. For now, the impact of drought on nickel smelting is mainly pushing up coke prices and increasing cost pressure. SMM will continue to monitor the follow-up dynamics of local water supply and smelter production.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] India 316-Grade Stainless Prices Hikes Again on Rising Ferro Molybdenum Costs
A leading Indian stainless steel producer raised 316-grade HR and CR coil prices by a further INR 4,000/t effective August 25, marking another upward revision for the grade this month. The hike was driven by sustained ferro molybdenum cost increases — FeMo 60% prices reached approximately INR 4,359,000/t on August 21, up INR 49,000/t from August 5 and approximately INR 322,000/t (8%) above the July 3 level of INR 4,037,000/t. India's domestic flat market remains firm, supported by steady downstream demand and subdued imports due to elevated freight costs and geopolitical uncertainties. Current benchmark prices stand at INR 219,000/t for 304 HRC and INR 418,000/t for 316 HRC. Near-term pricing direction will hinge on ferro molybdenum price movements and the extent of downstream buyer resistance to the latest increases.
