Astec Commissions Lüderitz Ship Loader Capable of Handling Zinc and Lead Products

Published: Aug 26, 2026 09:46

Astec Industries has completed delivery, assembly and commissioning of a bulk-materials handling and ship-loading system for Autoforce at Lüderitz port in Namibia. The installation is the first Telestack ship loader at the port and in Namibia. The system includes an HF18 wheeled hopper feeder, a TB58 radial telescopic ship loader, a 12-metre steel telescopic freefall chute and a 360-degree trimmer/deflector chute, with designed handling capacity of up to 1,500 t/h for Handy and Supramax vessels.

Originally procured for manganese ore, the system has also been used to load zinc and lead products for port customers. Astec said the first vessel loading achieved twice the feed rate of the previous conventional loading method. The source did not disclose zinc- or lead-specific throughput, customers or export volumes.

CME Group Launches U.S. Zinc Futures; Glencore, Trafigura Execute First Trades
Recently, CME Group announced that Glencore and Trafigura completed the first trades of its U.S. Zinc Futures contracts on the CME Globex platform. The initial trades were executed on August 20 for September delivery. In March 2026, CME Group revised its zinc futures contract to a U.S. duty-paid structure in response to market participants’ demand for a tool to manage U.S. pricing dynamics. As an exchange-traded and centrally cleared instrument, the contract provides a risk management tool for the all-in U.S. zinc price. CME Group said the product will help improve pricing accuracy and market transparency while enhancing hedging efficiency for producers, consumers and intermediaries. The U.S. Zinc Futures contract is physically settled and listed under COMEX rules.
