Escondida Files Grid Connection Request for New Power Infrastructure
Minera Escondida has submitted a “Proyecto Fehaciente” request to Chile’s National Electric Coordinator for the NEHVTI project, which would connect new electrical infrastructure to the 1×220 kV Zaldívar–Escondida transmission line, around 2.7 km from the existing Escondida substation. The project includes the construction of the Nueva Escondida substation and associated 220 kV and 69 kV transmission works. The project is designed to maintain power supply capacity for Escondida’s operations in the event that the current Escondida substation is taken out of service, a move linked to the dismantling of the Los Colorados concentrator. According to the company’s schedule, the first stage is expected to connect to the 220 kV system in June 2029, while the second stage, involving 69 kV network modifications and reconfiguration, is planned for August 2029. The project does not directly affect near-term copper output but supports Escondida’s longer-term operational continuity.
